The Welsh Marches, Winter

Winter light over frost-covered fields in the Welsh Marches.

The Welsh Marches region defines the border area between England and Wales, including the counties of Powys, Shropshire and Hereforshire. A landscape characterised by its rolling fields, forest and remote hills, the region also contains some of Britain's most important historic sites. The Marches have been a landscape fought over for thousands of years: from prehistory and the Roman Invasion of Britain, to the Anglo Saxon and medieval centuries, the region is scattered with their remains, which include some of Britain's finest castles and best-preserved hillforts.
