Mortimer Forest, Winter

Mortimer Forest, on the Shropshire-Herefordshire border, pictured during winter.

Situated near the medieval town of Ludlow, Mortimer Forest covers large areas of upland terrain overlooking South Shropshire and North Herefordshire. Wildlife such as rare fallow deer can still be seen within the 2,500 acre woodland, which overlooks one of Britain's most scenic landscapes. The forest was once controlled by Marcher lords; archaeological remains of their fortifications are still visible within and around the area. One of Britain's most impressive ancient buildings, Ludlow Castle, lies beneath Mortimer Forest's slopes next to the River Teme.
