Ironbridge, Shropshire

The Iron Bridge, spanning the Severn Gorge in Shropshire.

From its sources in the Welsh mountains, the River Severn passes through the town of Ironbridge, before flowing south along the Severn Valley towards Bridgnorth and the Wyre Forest. The Iron Bridge, after which the nearby town is named, was the first cast iron arch bridge in the world, and was a major engineering achievement at the time of its construction. The bridge was completed in 1781. Today the Ironbridge area of the Severn Gorge is a designated World Heritage Site, reflecting its important contribution to the Industrial Revolution.
